Garden lanterns are customizable light sources, ornately crafted from wrought iron ingots and wrought iron fence. Lanterns can also be crafted with stained glass panes for a more festive look.

When a garden lantern is first created, it has no light source. Placing it in the world will thus do nothing to help illuminate your surroundings. You must instead take a valid light source in your hand, like a torch, and right-click the lantern with it. This will place the light source in the lantern and illuminate it.

To remove a light source, shift+right-click the lantern with an empty hand. Breaking a lantern with a light source will cause the lantern to drop with the light still embedded inside. If the lantern is placed back in the world, so too will its light.

The current valid light sources are:

  • Candles
  • Vanilla torches
  • Vanilla redstone torches
  • Vanilla glowstone dust
  • Twilight Forest fireflies
  • Thaumcraft tallow candles

When using a redstone torch in a lantern, the lantern will emit a redstone signal. When using Thaumcraft candles in a lantern, the lantern will qualify as an infusion alter stabilizer.

If lanterns are not supported underneath by a solid surface, they will self connect to certain blocks like lattice and wood posts with a short length of light chain.

If the Colored Lights mod is installed, lanterns with stained glass will emit colored light. The light for some colored lanterns will be less than light level 15 in this case.
