Many collaborative books use the feature for automatically displaying Contributors.
We've heard from UW (ticket for internal reference): "the instructors and I would like for there to be a way for students themselves to upload and add their own Bio and picture for Book Contributors."
It's true that this isn't currently possible in the platform, with one exception. At the moment a user is added to a book's user list, their existing profile info (if any) is pulled into the Contributor that is automatically created for them in the book. However, after that initial moment of pulling from profile info, any subsequent changes to a user's profile are not synced with their corresponding Contributor in the book.
In other words, a non-admin user uploading a bio, a profile picture, etc. to their profile after having been added to a book will have no effect on the Contributor automatically saved for them and potentially displayed in the book.
Updating Contributor info is only possible for admin users in the book, since admins are able to manually update fields for any Contributor, but this is quite a long process in a book with many users. If saved changes to a user's profile info were to be automatically synced with their Contributor, it would be much easier to display the intended Contributor info in a book.
Feature Use Case
Automatically syncing updates to user profile info with Contributor info would better facilitate collaborative books with students. We've heard from UW that some classes make use of the Contributor display feature but are constrained by the fact that students (users without the role of admin) don't have updates they make to their user profiles reflected in their Contributor fields.
With auto-sync, students (or other non-admin users working on a collaborative book) would be able to edit their own bios, profile pictures, etc., and have this be reflected in the book without requiring manual intervention for each user on the part of an instructor or other admin user.
