Can't connect from my Windows (ssh timeout) #4131

Hi all,

First congratulations for this great program!

If I start Linux on this PC, I can connect to my Xpra on the other computer (a Debian 12). From Windows, I cannot connect. I installed Xpra according to the documentation, NOT distribution packages.

This is from Git Bash on Windows 10 Pro:

The programs included with the Debian GNU/Linux system are free software;
the exact distribution terms for each program are described in the
individual files in /usr/share/doc/*/copyright.

This latest shows that normal SSH works OK.

(I used the no openGL option because it shows a warning about "Intel". But same result when not passing that option.)

From the GUI, if I try to connect, things just "freeze" after entering the SSH key password.

This shows I have a program running:

Sorry, I had made a mistake: you need to use ssh=plink not ssh=putty and we bundle it in the installer (at least for now).
This is not the regular plink but the one from TortoiseSVN which includes a GUI for accepting keys / host /etc

Ah, yes. This had been removed in v6.
I have just removed it from v5 now, as their drivers have improved a lot: 2a699ce

Odd. It must get stuck somehow.
Please post the output adding -d ssh to your command line.
You should also be able to workaround the problem using the openssh backend with --ssh=ssh.

Thank you for the ideas!

--ssh=ssh made it work. :-) This way it asks the server fingerprint confirm in a totally different window (titled Git for Windows) and asks for my password on the server (in similar window), not the SSH key's password.

Well, that's lucky, I meant --ssh=putty instead!
--ssh=ssh doesn't always work on MS Windows - it didn't last time I tried.

Regarding the bug:

I think it's forgetting to use :101 here instead of 101.

I totally forgot to mention I'm typing these in Git Bash, not Command Prompt.

I have Git installed, which provides "Git Bash", which includes many lovely Linux/Unix stuff. I think THAT includes "ssh". And I don't have Putty, and prefer not to install it. Uninstalled when I noticed Git Bash provides much more traditional SSH solution (e.g Linux-like keyfile management). (So I'm very lucky with your mistake!) :)

--ssh=putty gives error, of course I guess installing Putty would solve that, so this is OK:

And regarding Intel driver, I'm on Core i5-3550 - I don't know if they "improve" those old drivers too. But it works for me now, without adding the opengl no option too.

Sorry, I had made a mistake: you need to use ssh=plink not ssh=putty and we bundle it in the installer (at least for now).
This is not the regular plink but the one from TortoiseSVN which includes a GUI for accepting keys / host /etc

I think it's forgetting to use :101 here instead of 101.

I was wrong about this, the _proxy subcommand figures it out and adds the : prefix when needed.

There was a bug when using xpra's builtin ssh server and specifying the display number on the xpra attach command line.
This is kind of redundant for the single server use case - as it only has a single display, so the client really should not bother specifying it.
From the command lines you included, you should not have been hitting this bug unless you ran xpra on port 22 (extremely unlikely), or you connected to xpra's port in ssh mode.

The fix above should only be needed when connecting to xpra's builtin ssh server.
I'm still not sure why switching to ssh=plink would resolve this issue.
Was there a mismatch? Was your session on :100 instead? Perhaps plink is more tolerant and uses :101 if it cannot find :100?

The timeout occurs if I don't specify any "--ssh" value. I think it's not related to the screen numbers. My original report had no --ssh value, because I didn't know this parameter.

--ssh=ssh: works from Git Bash, not from Command Prompt window
--ssh=plink: works from everywhere I think

So maybe the --ssh default value should be plink on Windows? That would also make it possible to connect from the GUI?

--ssh=paramiko has been the default for years, I very much doubt that many other people are hitting this timeout issue with it. There must be something specific to your system.

As per my earlier comment:

Please post the output adding -d ssh to your command line.

So we can figure out what is happening.

Ah, yes. Sorry.
I still don't know what's wrong with your log - everything looks fine, it runs the proxy command as expected:

And unless you have a really weird shell, this should work.
I suspect that the ssh=plink and ssh=ssh backends use a similar command line.

You could login via ssh from a terminal, then run the command by hand from there, press enter a few times and it should boot you out complaining that you're not an xpra client, which is correct.

I've added some commits to git master which may give us a clue - if you can run an updated beta builds later: 66b37f5, cffe5c5, 4993839

FYI: There is no need to remove the SSH_AGENT_UUID, it is just a unique random id generated every time and there is nothing confidential about it.
