Water usage and sustainability in data centres.
Sean and Adrian are discussing Google's water usage and replenishment rate in data centres. Cooper explains that Google prefers not to publish water usage efficiency (WUE) as a standalone metric. Adrian raises concerns about the overhead of service meshes and suggests the need for benchmarking. They are updating the data set specifications with a new metadata table and vendor-specific information. Sean and Adrian review the data set spec, share observations, and make comments. They plan to circulate the spec to the standards working group for comments before finalizing it. Sean suggests raising a PR with observations and then bringing it to the working group for a full review. Adrian questions whether vendor-specific information can be included in an ISO standard, which could potentially lead to a subset definition.

Standardizing data center metrics for GSF.
Chris Adams recommends using the EU Data Center Code of Conduct as a starting point for standardization. Adrian suggests aligning common metrics with a subset that will be sent to ISO. Sean and Adrian talk about updates to the agenda of the GSF standards working group, with AWS and Accenture getting involved. Sean and Adrian also discuss European specifications, and Chris will be responsible for creating a related issue.

Action Items

  • @sean Mcilroy - Submit RTC to SWG for review
  • Add a comment on pursuing ISO standardization to the specification review
  • @chris - Create issue linking to EU energy reporting templates
  • Reach out to Google for official views on water usage metrics
  • Chase down 2023 data from Microsoft
