TypeError: Cannot read property 'GLOBAL_CACHE_DIR' of undefined when running in directory without node_modules

When running e.g. snowpack init in a directory without a node_modules folder, it crashes:

This seems to be the culprit. I'm working around it by not running Snowpack in a non-noded-up folder, but thought it was worth mentioning.

That error message is strange though, it almost looks like it's failing to import GLOBAL_CACHE_DIR from our util.ts file. I can't reproduce :/

FWIW, had a similar problem in a non-npm folder (no node_modules, no package.json). Fixed after adding a package.json file.

with snowpack init and with snowpack dev when there is no package.json file:

I just got this error as well.
Tried first with npx snowpack init
Then installed the package as a global module and ran snowpack init
Both times I received the text below.

The weird part is, I just ran this command 4 or 5 days ago to build a svelte application using a template and it worked just fine.

Initializing a npm project did fix the issue for me, thank you for that @mbleigh !

I can reproduce now! Thanks all for the debugging info. Looks like it's an issue with circular dependencies in our final bundled package (which is CJS). Fix is here: #2366

Two comments on my previous post.

1. I missed that the command was CLI command was 'create-snowpack-app' and not 'snowpack'
2. As a work around for the GLOBAL_CACHE_DIR being undefined - if you run the correct 'create-snowpack-app' command from any folder that is npm + git inititalized, it will work as expected, curiously ...

@tremendus No the fix isn't out yet, because it was introduced on January 18th, but the latest release was October 12th. (long time ago!)

I am having this issue with an existing snowpack project running in Docker locally. pretty sure this fix will address my problem too. thanks~

I'm having it too. Of course, users should use the tool the way it's intended, but the error message is more than a bit misleading :D

Try running npm init first
